A Guide through Boston
Boston is known as "The Walking City" because just about everything is within a 20 minute walk. But don't take it from us, all you have to experience is finding a decent parking spot, receiving a sizable parking ticket, or gas prices in the area and you'll understand completely. Subway tolls are cheap too compared to other cities. They run at $1.70 one way, or $59/month. Cambridge, Somerville, Newton, Revere, and Braintree are all accessible by the subway due to the fact that it branches off in so many directions.
Commuter Rail
The commuter rail runs even further, south almost to Rhode Island, North to New Hampshire, and West as far as Worcester. Many extreme communters will find apartments in these suburbs (as low as $800/month for a decent 1BR) and spend about an hour+ to commute into the city. Generally the commuter rail runs at about $7 one way, but it varies depending on how far you're traveling.
The Difficulties of Travel
Lastly, if you're a traveler, it should be known that Logan International Airport (Bostons primary Airport) is not within walking distance of the city, and is more or less a pain to get to without using a cab or public transportation. Boston is notorious for having confusing roads, unusually one-ways, and missing highway signs. I mean, it's really not that bad, but if you're brand new it can be frustrating. We generally suggest sticking with cabs, but with base fares starting around $3.50, public transportation is by no means a bad alternative.
